Curriculum:
Language Arts:
The theme of our current unit is "Communication." Students are tested on comprehension, vocabulary, and spelling. See above for a list of the spelling and vocabulary words for the week.
Social Studies:
Each student has a workbook called Our California. We usually complete a lesson each week. We are working on Unit 4. Students should be bringing these workbooks home to help them with their social studies homework. There is a Unit test at the completion of each unit.
Science:
Our current science module is called "Solid Earth." Each student has a science journal that they use in class as they work through a variety of activities.
Math: We are currently in the fourth quarter of the year.
In the first quarter of the year in math we learned about place value up to hundred millions, rounding numbers, adding and subtracting numbers with regrouping, multiplying multi-digit numbers by a one-digit number, multiplying multi-digit numbers by a two-digit number, and variables and expression. It is expected that students have already memorized the multiplication and division facts prior to starting 4th grade.
In the second quarter of the year we learned about dividing multi-digit dividends by 1 digit divisors, geometry, fractions, addition and subtraction of fractions, and decimals.
In the third quarter of the year we learned about operations with decimals, solving equations, integers, measurement, perimeter, area, data, and graphs.
In the fourth quarter of the year we are learning about ordered pairs, coordinate grids, formulas and equations, congruence and symmetry, and probability.
General Announcements:
Students are allowed to take their textbooks home, but please bring them back to school each day.

Extra Credit Opportunities:
Science: Visit the FOSS website (information listed above). Write a book report on one of the fiction or non-fiction books listed. The report should be at least 4 paragraphs.
Paragraph 1: Why you chose to read that particular book.
Paragraph 2: Write a summary of the book.
Paragraph 3: Write about how the content of the book
relates to the subject of the current
science module.
Paragraph 4: Write about whether or not you would
recommend this book to other readers.
If you want a list of other extra credit opportunities in science I'll provide that for you.
Math: Problem solvers 1-100 are available in class. If all 100 problem solvers are completed I'll teach those children some advanced algebra, for their age, using a program called "Hands on Equations." | | Homework InformationStudents get a homework packet on Monday. These packets are due the following Monday.
Please remind students that it is their responsibility to have homework ready to turn in when it is due. I don't accept any late homework assignments unless it is due to a child being absent. Students need to turn in the late homework within one day of returning to school if you were absent for one day, two days if you were absent for two days, etc.
Thank you,
Mr. Rindt |
