About Serrania Avenue Elementary School

Serrania Avenue Elementary School is one of the finest elementary schools in southern California. While it looks and feels like a conveniently located neighborhood school, it is one of the best kept secrets in the southwest San Fernando Valley educational community, ranking in the 95th percentile of like schools in the district. In the 2005/06 school year there were approximately 600 students enrolled in our school from numerous and diverse backgrounds and nationalities.

The 2007/2008 school year will mark the first year with our new principal, Vivian Cordoba. Ms. Cordoba has worked in the Los Angeles Unified School District for 29 years as a teacher, advisor, and as Assistant Principal for the last 5 years prior to coming to Serrania. She received her B.A. from UCLA and has a Masters Degree in Educational Technology from Pepperdine University. She is a lifelong learner and educator and we are thrilled to have her!

In her first year, our Assistant Principal Marcia Koff, has proved herself to be an excellent administrator, a great team player and an inspirational guiding force at our school. She puts our children first and her selfless good nature has proved to be invaluable.

Vicki Walker leads our hard working office staff that includes Gail Keller and Cindy Heath and Mr. Alan Ford is responsible for the beautiful campus that we all enjoy.

Serrania Avenue Elementary is successful because of our amazing roster of teachers. Many have been honored for their teaching contributions and they are truly an amazing group of experienced and caring mentors for the children. All of the teachers at Serrania are fully credentialed and are all required to actively participate in continuing education classes each year.

Serrania is a "School for Advanced Studies" and we offer both an SAS program that begins in 3rd grade, as well as the standards based curriculum for students in our full day Kindergarten through 5th grade. LAUSD requires that grades K-3 have no more than 20 children per class, and that grades 4 & 5 have no more than 36 students per class. Most all teachers have aides.

The campus opens in the morning with general supervision starting at 7:00am and the after school supervision program ends at 5:00. In addition to the LAUSD sponsored after school supervision, we also offer KidCare, an ongoing Homework Club, and an enriched after school program through "E3" (formerly known as EASE). PTA offers a number of rotating after school classes including Art, Mad Science, Dance, Cheerleading, Tennis and Movie Making & Theater to name a few.

Our main fundraising body is known as Friends of Serrania or FOS. This organization is a 501c(3) registered charitable organization and our fundraising efforts combined with PTA in 05/06 brought in more than $95,000. Parents and faculty together chose to allocate the money to the PE, Computer & Art Programs for the 07/08 year, as well as teachers' aides, reading programs, and school maintenance.

Our PTA is the backbone of our school community and has many different projects throughout the year that work to bring us together and define us as a group. We are looking forward to another wonderful year and hope that you will get involved in any way you can.

The campus at Serrania Avenue Elementary is large and beautifully maintained. Colorful murals are painted on our buildings and our track is surrounded by grass and trees. Students have a large yard in which to play and make friends. We have won many School Beautification awards and were also recently awarded a grant for additional playground equipment.

We welcome you to visit our school and become part of our community, either as a parent, student, volunteer, mentor, sponsor, grant writer, or any other way you feel you can participate. Take a tour, give us a call at 818-342-6700 or email us at office@serraniaavenue.org.
