Serrania Avenue Elementary School is one of the finest elementary schools in southern California. While it looks and feels like a conveniently located neighborhood school, it is one of the best kept secrets in the southwest San Fernando Valley educational community, ranking in the 95th percentile of like schools in the district. We are also a California Distinguished School, which puts us in the top 5% of schools in California. We have approximately 700 students enrolled in our school from numerous and diverse backgrounds and nationalities.
The 2009/2010 school year is our first year with our new principal,
Robin Toder. Ms. Toder comes to us from Enadia Way Elementary School in West Hills and we have all been so delighted and impressed with her leadership and poise.
Our Assistant Principal
Marcia Koff, has been with us since the 2006/2007 school year and she has proved herself to be an excellent administrator, a great team player and an inspirational guiding force at our school. She puts our children first and her selfless good nature has proved to be invaluable.
Our hard working office staff is led by
Cindy Heath and
Susan Rodwig and Mr. Alan Ford is responsible for the beautiful campus that we all enjoy.
Serrania Avenue Elementary is successful because of our amazing
roster of teachers and we LOVE to brag about the fact that we have three teachers who are Nationally Board Certified. Many others have been honored for their teaching contributions and they are truly an amazing group of experienced and caring mentors for the children. All of the teachers at Serrania are fully credentialed and all are active participants in ongoing continuing education classes.
Serrania is a "School for Advanced Studies" and we offer both an SAS program that begins in 3rd grade, as well as the standards based curriculum for students in our full day Kindergarten through 5th grade.
The campus opens in the morning with general supervision starting at 7:00am and the after school supervision program ends at 5:00. In addition to the LAUSD sponsored after school supervision, we also offer an enriched after school program through "E3" (formerly known as EASE)and through the PTA. PTA offers a number of rotating
after school classes including Homework Club, Art, Mad Science, Dance, Cheerleading, Tennis and Movies By Kids , Fitness and Cheer, Singing, Theater, Hebrew, Martial Arts & Spanish.
Our main fundraising body is known as
Friends of Serrania or FOS. This organization is a 501c(3) registered charitable organization and our fundraising efforts combined with PTA in 07/08 brought in more than $100,000. Parents and faculty together chose to allocate the money to the PE, Computer & Art Programs for the 0/10 year, as well as teachers' aides, the Accelerated Reading Program, technology upgrades for the classes and school maintenance.
Our PTA is the backbone of our school community and has many different projects throughout the year that work to bring us together and define us as a group. We are looking forward to another wonderful year and hope that you will get involved in any way you can.
The campus at Serrania Avenue Elementary is large and beautifully maintained. Colorful murals are painted on our buildings and our track is surrounded by grass and trees. Students have a large yard in which to play and make friends. We are a California Distinguished School and we have won many School Beautification awards.
